The Sustainable Development and
the EcoLomics concepts:
Some
resources on the commemoration of the
20th anniversary of Our Common Future (1987) |
|

The conclusion of an independent UN body, the
'Brundtland
Commission,' officially known as the World
Commission on Environment and Development (WCED), in 1987, after
three years of deliberations in Geneva and hearings in all major
regions of the world, was a globally significant political
milestone. Its report was published as
Our Common Future, a
volume which turned out to be hugely successful. The
Commission's key achievement was the creation of the
Sustainable Development paradigm and its promotion across
numerous
multilateral processes. The 20th anniversary of this publication led
to a number of commemorative events, for instance in Ottawa
Jim MacNeill, O.C., the
Commission's Secretary General and the chief architect and lead
author of the report gave a Lecture on
Sustainable Development: A New Urgency.
At the Law Faculty a
Roundtable
(program;
photo gallery) reflected on the achievements and on the state of
play of this paradigm. Discussions at the same time also considered
the 'EcoLomics' concept launched 5 years ago, a
research essay
on this question initiated on
this occasion is now published.
