What is it? WIPO is dedicated to helping
to ensure that the rights of creators and owners of intellectual property
are protected worldwide and that inventors and authors are recognized and
rewarded for their ingenuity.
What does it do? Recent work has
included studies of:
the relationship between patents and other forms of intellectual
property protection for biotechnological inventions (e.g., UPOV-style
plant variety protection, trade secrets and geographical indications);
the moral or ethical dimensions of commercialising inventions
involving genetic alteration of plants or animals;
the conservation and preservation of the environment; and
the protection of animal and human health (including such issues as
biosafety, biological diversity, food security and sustainable development).
Cooperation WIPO cooperates closely with
its two main constituencies: its member states and private sector NGOs. It
also cooperates with other UN organizations, NGOs and IGOs on appropriate
themes.
