What is it? The International Institute for Sustainable Development promotes the transition toward a sustainable future through policy research, information exchange, analysis and advocacy. The Institute develops policy recommendations based on rigorous research and analysis, establishes knowledge networks to build capacity and mutual understanding among civil society and other institutions in both North and South, and reports on the international negotiations that are critical to the sustainability of the planet. IISD was established in 1990 as part of Canada's response to the 1987 report of the Brundtland Commission, Our Common Future. Though based at the geographic centre of Canada, IISD is an international organization _ its directors, staff, partners and projects are distributed around the globe. Moreover, the Institute seeks to use the empowering potential of electronic communications to help bridge the gaps between North and South, combine information bases, and develop new ideas and practices for sustainable development.

What does it do? The European Office was established in September 1999 as the base for IISD's programme on international trade and for building linkages with European institutions and affairs. Its research in Geneva focuses on the World Trade Organization, Environmental Security, Climate Change and Civil Society and IISD's relations with international organizations and the private sector.

Cooperation IISD's partners include the UN Environment Programme, the World Conservation
Union (IUCN)
, The Royal Institute for International Affairs (RIIA), Global Responsibility, the International Centre for Trade and Sustainable Development (ICTSD) and many others.
